About a week ago I was notified of a situation involving a couple turtles and a few cats. A house had been foreclosed on and the occupants were court ordered to leave, they left behind 2 turtles and a dozen or so cats, one of which was a very elderly, extremely emaciated, ungroomed Old Cat. I loaded up the turtles with the help of a couple sheriffs deputy's, the cats had all scattered outside and were watching the goings on except for the Old Cat who was desperately trying to get back into her home, by this time it was pouring down rain so I put the Old Cat into a carrier and brought her home. Of course she hid, this wasn't her home, these other cats weren't her cat friends and her people were no where to be seen, Old Cat lost whatever light she may have had left in her life. She ate and drank very little, slept a lot on a soft cozy blanket with a heating pad and I imagine she thought about home and her family. Her family called a few days later, came to get the turtles and her, but when they arrived they really didn't have a way to care for any of them it was decided they'd stay at my house until they got settled. Old Cat has a mouth full of rotted, broken teeth, swollen infected gums and only weighs about 4 pounds, her fur is matted and filthy from lack of grooming, Old Cat is anywhere from 16 to 18 years old, Old Cat is tired and ready to move on from this world. I called her owners who agreed euthanasia was the appropriate thing they actually said it should've been done a year prior. When asked if they wanted to take her I was told no it would just be to hard, when asked if they wanted to say goodbye I was told the same thing. So I'll take Old Cat and I'll say goodbye, because even though it's hard, and even though I'm not her family, this is one last act of kindness I can show to one skinny, scraggly, ungroomed Old Cat.
